As a youth, my free time was spent either outdoors exploring a large field and forest behind my house, or exploring virtual worlds playing video games in my living room. After years of school and work and the general information overload of modern life, the expansive feeling of exploration is even more important to me. I explore Google Street View for reference images, and transform urban landscapes into calming scenes intended to create space for introspection. Creating surreal landscapes is a form of nostalgic escapism for me, while simultaneously trying to make sense of our infinitely complex world. Every building has a story to tell and every structure interacts with its environment in untold ways. Common urban places where infrastructure meets nature are transformed into simple scenes with uncanny colors and vague narrative elements. The minimal composition and muted colors are meant to be unexpected enough to make viewers pause and reflect on their own environments. I hope a playful sense of curiosity comes through in my abstracted landscapes.
